Types of Braces

Thanks to today’s advances in orthodontic technology, Dr. Joseph K. Ryan is able to provide his patients with more options when it comes to wearing braces than ever before. While traditional metal braces are still widely used, clear braces are very popular with teens and adults who are self-conscious about wearing braces, along with clear aligners, the “braceless” alternative to straight teeth. Dr. Ryan will help you determine which treatment option is right for you.

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces used today. They are smaller and more comfortable than ever before and constructed of high-grade metal alloys. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on teenage and adult patients who have aesthetic concerns.

Clear Aligners

Clear appliances, such as Spark aligners, use a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners to straighten your teeth. No one can tell you are wearing the aligners because they are invisible. Spark aligners are removable so you are not limited in what you can eat and drink during treatment. Plus... brushing and flossing are less of a hassle.

Braces vs Clear Aligners: Which One Should I Choose?

Choosing between braces and clear aligners depends on lifestyle, goals, and orthodontic needs. Here is what to consider:

Braces

  • Work around the clock with no need for daily reminders

  • Ideal for complex bite and alignment issues

  • Great option for children and teens who need a structured system

Clear Aligners

  • Nearly invisible and removable for meals and brushing

  • Great for adults and responsible teens

  • Offer more flexibility while still achieving predictable tooth movement

Dr. Ryan will explain the advantages of each option and recommend the best fit during your consultation.

How Do I Know Which Type of Braces Is Best for Me?

The right option depends on:

  • The complexity of your orthodontic needs

  • Your preference for appearance and visibility

  • Lifestyle habits and how consistently you can wear aligners

  • Whether comfort, speed, or discretion is your top priority

During your evaluation, Dr. Ryan will review your goals and provide a personalized recommendation.

FAQ

Are Ceramic Braces as Effective as Metal Braces?

Yes. Ceramic braces move teeth just as efficiently as metal braces, although they may require more care to keep the brackets looking their best.

Most patients finish treatment within 12 to 24 months. The timeline depends on the severity of the bite, spacing, and alignment issues, as well as how consistently appliances or aligners are worn.

In many cases, yes. If your teeth have progressed to a point where aligners can complete the remaining movement, Dr. Ryan may discuss transitioning from braces to clear aligners.

Braces typically require adjustment appointments every 4 to 8 weeks to keep treatment moving safely and efficiently. Clear aligners may require slightly fewer in-office check-ins depending on your treatment plan.

Some soreness is normal for a day or two after braces are placed or adjusted, but it typically fades quickly. Most patients describe the feeling as pressure rather than pain, and over-the-counter pain relief is usually all that’s needed.
