Education plays an important role in building healthier communities. Dr. Joseph Ryan has partnered with the local library to support educational initiatives and promote lifelong learning throughout the McAllen area.
As part of this partnership, Dr. Ryan participated in an interview discussing oral health, community service, and the importance of making reliable dental information accessible to families. Dr. Ryan served as President of the McAllen Public Library (MPL) Board for nine years, helping lead the library to 26 international awards and more than 160 awards overall. Under his leadership, the library also earned the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA) Achievement of Library Excellence Award for nine consecutive years. In 2026, the board was also a runner-up for the American Library Association (ALA) Trustee Citation Award, narrowly missing the national honor.
